The Island of Tenerife is incredibly diverse and it is very easy to get around. Wether you decide to hire a car, book an excursion or take a local bus, you will have an incredible experience discovering the Island. Travel 4 Baby have created this guide to highlight some of our favourite spots.
Teide National Park
Mount Teide is an impressive sight to behold. Standing at a huge 12,000 feet high it’s the highest peak in Spain. Drive through the clouds as you enter the impressive lunar landscape. It almost feels like you are on the moon! The views are breathtaking from above the clouds and for those wanting to go even higher, you can brave the cable car ride to the top. Learn about the last volcanic eruptions and the history of the Island. Wind your way in and out through the crazy rock formations and enjoy an amazing family experience. Transport options are varied for example, you can go by bus, Jeep or you could even hire a car. You can also go by day or night! Did you know that Mount Teide has been voted one of the best places in the world to see the planets and stars? Professional astronomers map out the night’s sky in this once in a lifetime experience.
Santa Cruz & La Laguna
Santa Cruz, the capital of Tenerife is a beautiful city on the sea. First stop has to be the Plaza España with shops, tapas bars and parks galore. The African Food market is a great place to visit to sample local food and drink. The Palmetum park is beautiful, these botanical gardens offer 12 hectares of incredible trees, plants and wildlife. There are vast open spaces for children to run free and the pathways are easily accessible for pushchairs. Did you know… the beach is Santa Cruz, Playa De Las Teresitas is the only natural white sandy beach on the Island! You can take the hop on, hop off bus around the city or even catch a tram up to the UNESCO city La Laguna. Here you will find beautiful old buildings, local markets and tapas bars as well as the Science Museum.
Icod De Los Vinos
If you are venturing into the traditional, Northwest town of Icod De Los Vinos during your stay, a visit to the famous Dragon Tree is a must. The Dragon Tree is the oldest tree of its kind in the world! It is beautiful. With a huge trunk, winding branches resembling giant swords and luscious green leaves it is an incredible sight to behold. The tree is set in beautiful botanical gardens, the perfect place for young children to explore and step into a magical, enchanted land. The tree is situated right next to the church square. There you will find a cafe and a small children’s play park. There is underground parking in this area and as an added bonus, it is right next to both the main high street of Icod and also opposite the butterfly park.
Puerto De La Cruz
Puerto De La Cruz is situated in the North of Tenerife and from there you have the most incredible views of Mount Teide. There is a promenade lined with shops, bars and restaurants, a traditional old town with tapas bars and right in the centre you will find the breathtaking Largo Martinez. Created by the artist Cesar Manrique, the stunning saltwater pools are a work of art. Entry into the pools is cheap and there’s something for the whole family to enjoy. Puerto De La Cruz is much greener than the resorts in the South and this is why you will find the beautiful Botanical Gardens in this area as well as the famous, family favourite Loro Parque which has been voted the ‘number 1’ animal park in Europe!
Pyramids of Guimar
Did you know Tenerife have Pyramids? There are many theories surrounding the origin and age of them, there are six in total and they are made entirely from lava stone. There is also a museum, botanical gardens and outdoor walking trails.
Anaga Mountain range
As you drive through the Anaga Mountain range you will feel as though you have stepped into the Amazon Rainforest. The Las Mercedes Forest is one of the last three remaining subtropical laurel forests remaining on Earth. The plants, views and scenery are spectacular. If you drive down to the Northeast village of Punta Del Hidalgo you will believe you have just stepped into the set of Pirates of the Caribbean. Huge cliffs, giant waves and views out over the great Atlantic Ocean. You sometimes feel like you are at the edge of the earth and the only ones around. It is real Tenerife at its best.
Don’t forget… Travel 4 baby can provide you with car seats, baby wagons, pushchairs and much more to make your days out in Tenerife even more enjoyable. We can also recommend specific family friendly excursions to help you during your stay.
